The creative team behind the newly released animated feature “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has announced plans for additional spinoffs, revealed that an early draft nearly included a pregnancy storyline for Katara, and issued a strong warning to fans against seeking out an alleged unfinished version that has leaked on the Dark Web.

The film, which hit theaters on July 24, 2026, has already earned a stellar TMDb rating of 9.2 out of 10 and runs 99 minutes. Directed by Lauren Montgomery, the voice cast includes Eric Nam as Aang, Jessica Matten as Katara, Dave Bautista as Tagah, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Zuko, Dionne Quan as Toph, Dee Bradley Baker as Appa and Momo, and Freida Pinto as Avatar Sonam. The story follows Aang, the last Airbender, as he searches for an ancient power to save his culture from extinction, aided by friends on a global quest.

Expanded Universe Plans

During a press gathering after the film’s opening weekend, Montgomery and key producers confirmed that multiple spinoff projects are in active development. While they declined to specify timelines or formats, they indicated that the franchise would explore untold chapters from the Avatar timeline, including stories focusing on secondary characters and earlier Avatars.

“We’ve built a world that fans are deeply invested in, and there is much more to tell,” a producer stated without attribution. The team emphasized that these spinoffs would maintain the same animation style and storytelling tone that made the original series a phenomenon.

The Cut Pregnancy Plot

In a candid behind-the-scenes discussion, Montgomery revealed that an early script treatment considered having Katara become pregnant during the film’s events. The idea was ultimately scrapped because it would have fundamentally altered the character’s arc and the group’s dynamic.

“We realized it would shift the focus away from the core adventure and the emotional stakes that drive the story,” Montgomery explained. “Katara’s journey in this movie is about her own growth and her bond with Aang, not about parenthood. It felt premature and would have limited what we could do with her in future installments.”

The director added that the decision was made collectively with the writing team and voice actors, who felt the pregnancy storyline would have undermined the film’s themes of sacrifice and cultural preservation. Jessica Matten, who voices Katara, supported the choice, noting that the character’s agency remained intact.

Dark Web Leak Warning

Perhaps the most urgent part of the announcement concerned a rough, unfinished version of the film that surfaced on illicit Dark Web forums earlier this week. The team urged fans not to watch or share the leak, describing it as missing visual effects, placeholder audio, and incomplete animation.

“What’s out there is not the movie we made,” Montgomery said. “It’s a work-in-progress that does a disservice to the hundreds of artists who poured years into this project. Watching it would spoil the intended experience and could expose viewers to security risks.”
