Miwa Nishikawa’s ‘Children Untold’ to Open Platform Competition at Toronto

Acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Miwa Nishikawa will open the Platform section of the Toronto International Film Festival with her latest feature, Children Untold, festival organizers announced Tuesday. The drama, set against the backdrop of war, will premiere at the festival before its theatrical release on October 16, 2026.

Children Untold marks Nishikawa’s return to the international festival circuit following her award-winning Under the Open Sky and the psychological family drama The Long Excuse. The Platform competition, known for spotlighting bold and distinctive auteur-driven cinema, will give the film its world premiere during the 51st edition of TIFF, running from September 10 to 20.

The film’s cast includes Ami Koyae, Fumi Nikaido, Kaito Sakurai, and Yutaka Takenouchi. While detailed plot points remain under wraps, the studio has described the project as a war drama that grapples with the unseen consequences of conflict, particularly on the lives of children. The title Children Untold suggests a narrative centered on voices that history has often overlooked-young survivors navigating a brutal and fractured world.

Nishikawa, who also wrote the screenplay, is known for her patient, emotionally intricate storytelling. Her films frequently examine the quiet moral compromises people make in extreme circumstances, and early indications suggest Children Untold will follow that tradition.

“We are thrilled to launch Platform with Miwa Nishikawa’s deeply moving and humanistic new film,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey in a statement. “She brings a rare sensitivity to complex historical trauma, and Children Untold promises to be one of the most talked-about films of the festival.”

The Platform program, now in its 11th year, was created to elevate ambitious, risk-taking cinema from around the world. Previous Platform openers include The Death of Stalin, Aniara, and The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open. A jury of international filmmakers will award a prize to the best Platform film, selected from a lineup that will be announced in full next month.

Children Untold is the latest high-profile Japanese title to compete in the section. The country’s cinema has enjoyed strong representation at TIFF in recent years, with Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car taking the Platform prize in 2021 before going on to win the Oscar for Best International Feature.

For Nishikawa, the selection is a significant career milestone. The director has long been a fixture at festivals worldwide-her film Heaven’s Story competed at Venice, and The Long Excuse screened at San Sebastian and Toronto. However, she has never before opened a major competition section at a top-tier North American festival.

The film’s October 16 release date positions it as a potential awards-season contender, particularly if it gains traction during its TIFF run. With no confirmed runtime and currently no TMDb rating, Children Untold is still taking shape for international critics and audiences, but the Platform slot guarantees strong early visibility.

Nishikawa’s decision to explore war from a child’s perspective continues a thread in her work that examines how trauma reshapes identity and memory. In earlier interviews, she has cited the documentary The Act of Killing and the novels of Kenzaburō Ōe as influences on her thinking about historical violence and its personal toll.

Ami Koyae, best known for her work in indie dramas, leads the cast. Fumi Nikaido, a veteran of both art-house and commercial Japanese cinema, appears in a supporting role. Kaito Sakurai and Yutaka Takenouchi round out the principal ensemble. Their characters have not been publicly identified, but the film’s marketing materials emphasize intimate portraiture over large-scale spectacle.

The Toronto International Film Festival will release its full Platform lineup on August 11. The opening-night selection is considered a bellwether for the section’s overall tone-typically dark, literary, and thematically weighty. Children Untold fits that mold, which should appeal to festival jurors and art-house distributors alike.

As the fall festival season approaches, Children Untold positions itself as one of the most anticipated international titles of the year. Whether it can translate Platform acclaim into broader commercial and critical success will depend heavily on its reception in early September.
