McKenzie, who has become a vocal critic of the crypto industry since leaving acting to study economics, said the documentary distills years of research into a cautionary tale about digital assets. Instead of sulking or shelving the work, McKenzie pivoted. McKenzie's documentary, titled Clean State in an ironic nod to the blockchain's promise of a fresh start, reportedly includes interviews with former insiders and regulatory officials who describe a world of pump-and-dump schemes and wash trading. It also follows the story of Sophie, a fictional artist facing her absent father's financial ruin - a narrative device McKenzie said was added to humanize the abstract economic concepts.

The film's director, Hadi Shaaban, a relative newcomer known for intimate character studies, said the blend of personal drama and investigative journalism was a deliberate choice. In a statement, Shaaban explained that the emotional core - played out by Florence Crowe as Sophie and Stacey Guthrie as Julie - helps viewers see that crypto isn't just a tech story but a human one. The film's official synopsis, released last year, describes Sophie as "a passionate artist" who must come to terms with her estranged father after her mother's death, a plot thread that intersects with the family's bad investments in digital tokens.

Shaaban's approach seems to have paid off in festival circles. Though Clean State has not yet secured a major award, it screened at two smaller documentary festivals in early 2026, where audience reactions were reportedly strong. Critics praised the film's clarity, but the TMDb user rating currently sits at a flat 0/10 - a figure McKenzie attributes to coordinated review-bombing by crypto enthusiasts who have tracked the project since its announcement. The actor said he expected the attacks, and that they're evidence of the very problem he's trying to expose.

"The fact that anonymous accounts are trying to sink a documentary they haven't even seen tells you everything you need to know about the culture," McKenzie said. "These are the same tactics the industry uses to keep regulators at bay. I take it as a badge of honor."

McKenzie added that the alternative distribution model has already proven financially viable, if not lucrative.
