Diego Luna to Receive Heart of Sarajevo Honor

The Sarajevo Film Festival announced this morning that Diego Luna will receive an Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award during its upcoming 32nd edition, honoring the Mexican actor and director for his body of work and longtime advocacy for social justice. The festival, set to run from August 14 through August 21 in the Bosnian capital, will present Luna with the award at a ceremony on August 19.

Luna, best known worldwide for playing Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and its subsequent Disney+ series Andor, has built a career that spans Mexican independent cinema, Hollywood blockbusters, and bilingual storytelling. Festival organizers emphasized that the honor recognizes not only his performances but also his commitment to amplifying marginalized voices through his production company, La Corriente del Golfo, and his outspoken support for immigrant rights and political freedom.

“Diego Luna embodies the kind of artist the Heart of Sarajevo Award was created to celebrate - someone who uses their platform to illuminate difficult truths and to stand with communities under pressure,” festival director Mirsad Purivatra said in a prepared statement. The award has previously been given to figures such as Julianne Moore, Gael García Bernal, and Mike Leigh.

A Career of Depth and Activism

Luna first gained international attention alongside childhood friend Gael García Bernal in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 coming-of-age drama Y Tu Mamá También, a film that announced a new wave of Mexican cinema. He went on to work with directors including Steven Soderbergh, Gus Van Sant, and Rian Johnson, but he has consistently returned to Spanish-language projects and to roles that explore identity, rebellion, and resistance.

His portrayal of Cassian Andor - a rebel spy forged in the crucible of imperial oppression - has been widely praised for grounding the Star Wars universe in moral complexity. The series Andor, created by Tony Gilroy, deepened that character’s story and earned Luna a new generation of fans. Yet he has also continued to appear in smaller, politically charged films such as The Perfect Dictatorship and Cesar Chavez, in which he played the labor leader.

Beyond acting, Luna co-founded the documentary and fiction production company La Corriente del Golfo, which has backed films such as The Untamed, The Chambermaid, and the award-winning documentary States of Fear. The company’s stated mission is to tell stories from underrepresented perspectives across Latin America. Luna has also been a vocal critic of U.S. immigration policy and has participated in multiple campaigns to support migrant families separated at the border.

The Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award is typically given to individuals whose artistic work and public engagement reflect the festival’s founding spirit. Sarajevo’s festival began during the siege of the city in 1995 and has since grown into the premier film event in Southeast Europe, maintaining a commitment to films that confront war, exile, and resilience.

Luna’s visit to Bosnia marks his first appearance at the festival, though he has long expressed admiration for the region’s cinema. Festival programmers are planning a public conversation with the actor - likely to focus on his experiences making politically engaged art across both the Hollywood studio system and independent production - as well as a screening of one of his films. The title has not yet been confirmed, but speculation points toward Andor or perhaps the 2004 crime drama The Motorcycle Diaries, in which Luna played Che Guevara’s traveling companion.

The Heart of Sarajevo statuette itself is a small bronze sculpture of a stylized heart, designed by Bosnian artist Suad Šehabović. Past recipients have described it as one of the more emotional honors in the festival circuit, in part because of the ceremony’s setting in a city that rebuilt itself from near-total destruction.

Luna joins a roster of 2026 Heart of Sarajevo honorees that includes a yet-to-be-announced lifetime achievement recipient. The festival’s competitive sections will feature films from across the Balkans and the broader region, with juries composed of international filmmakers and critics.

For Luna, the award adds to a growing list of recognitions that reflect his dual identity as both a mainstream star and an independent-minded artist committed to political storytelling. He is currently in post-production on a new directorial project, details of which remain under wraps, and continues to develop series and films through La Corriente del Golfo. The Sarajevo Film Festival runs from August 14 to 21, with the honorary ceremony scheduled for the evening of August 19 at the National Theatre.
