“Manhunt” Director John Woo Calls His 2017 Thriller “a Film About Fascism” as It Gets a Fresh Look

In a new interview timed to the film’s continued life on streaming platforms, legendary action director John Woo has reframed his 2017 crime thriller Manhunt as something far more political than its chase sequences suggest. Woo, speaking about the project for the first time in depth in years, described the movie as “a film about fascism” - a haunting exploration of alienation and masculinity set against a corrupt legal system.

The film, which premiered on November 19, 2017, and runs 106 minutes, follows Du Qiu, a prosecutor played by Zhang Hanyu, who is framed for a murder he did not commit. Forced to go on the run, he must clear his name while evading a relentless international manhunt. The premise, Woo explained, was never just about survival. It was about the dehumanizing machinery of the state and the men who are broken or hardened by it.

“Fascism isn’t always loud; it creeps into institutions, into the way we think about duty and loyalty. In this film, the system is the villain. The chase is just the surface,” Woo said in the interview, translated for a Western audience. He added that the protagonist’s isolation is deliberately heightened to mirror a modern anxiety: “Du Qiu is not just running from police. He is running from being erased.”

That thematic weight was largely buried in the film’s initial reception. Manhunt landed to mixed reviews, with a TMDb rating of 5.598/10, and was often discussed as a throwback to Woo’s balletic, double-gun action style. Critics at the time praised the set pieces - including a memorable motorcycle and car chase through Osaka - but many dismissed the plot as convoluted. Woo, however, insists that the chaos was intentional.

“The world is confusing when you have no allies. The fragmented editing, the constant movement - that is the emotional state of a man suffocating under a false accusation. I wanted the audience to feel that claustrophobia, not just watch it,” he said.

A Recasting of the Action Genre

The director, best known for Hard Boiled, Face/Off, and Mission: Impossible II, admitted that Manhunt allowed him to subvert his own signature style. Where his early Hong Kong films celebrated loyalty between male partners, Manhunt examines toxic masculinity in a more critical light. The male characters - Du Qiu, the Japanese detective Hiroshi Sakai (Hiroyuki Ikeuchi), and the criminal fixer Yoshihiro Sakai (Jun Kunimura) - are all trapped by their rigid notions of honor and revenge.

“In my earlier movies, men found salvation through brotherhood. Here, that brotherhood is corrupted. It becomes a kind of tribal violence. The men are strong, but their strength is their prison,” Woo explained. He pointed to a key scene where Du Qiu and his pursuer share a quiet moment of respect, only to immediately resume their violent dance. “That is the absurdity of male ego. They recognize each other’s humanity, but the system - the fascist impulse - tells them they must be enemies.”

The film’s international cast, which includes Korean actress Ha Ji-won as Rain, Chinese stars Qi Wei and Zhang Hanyu, and Japanese veterans Jun Kunimura and Naoto Takenaka, was a deliberate attempt to blur national lines. “Fascism doesn’t belong to one country. It is an infection. I cast actors from across Asia to show that this story is not about Japan or China. It is about power and who wields it,” Woo said.

A Quiet Legacy

Though Manhunt was not a major box office event in the West, it has developed a cult following among action completists. The film’s production was notable for its logistical ambition - Woo staged shootouts in crowded night markets, high-speed boat pursuits, and a spectacular glass-house showdown. Behind the scenes, the director also gave a small role to his daughter, Angeles Woo, who plays Dawn, a key supporting character.

Woo’s recent comments come as he reflects on his career amid a surge of interest in his early work, with restorations and retrospectives touring internationally. He acknowledged that Manhunt was made during a difficult personal period, which he says informed its somber tone. “I was thinking a lot about duty and sacrifice - not as glorious things, but as weights. When a man accepts a false accusation, he is forced to confront who he is outside his title. That is a fascist trick: make the innocent feel guilty enough to disappear.”

The director also addressed the film’s ending, which has been debated since release. Without giving away spoilers, Woo said he chose a resolution that prioritizes emotional reconciliation over explosive catharsis. “Action can be a form of release, but true liberation is walking away from the gun. That is the anti-fascist statement. In the end, the man must choose to be a human, not a weapon.”

As Manhunt finds new audiences via digital rentals, Woo hopes viewers will look past the surface thrills. “It is a violent movie, yes. But it is violent against a culture that loves violence. I made this film to question the very idea of the lone hero. That hero is often the first face of authoritarianism.”
