Byron Allen’s Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American distribution rights to “Mooch,” a golf crime comedy directed and co-written by Jeff Ryan. The deal was announced today by Freestyle Digital Media vice president of acquisitions Jordan Fields, who negotiated directly with Ryan for the independent film.

“Mooch” follows a down-on-his-luck golf hustler who gets entangled in a high-stakes heist involving a mobster’s prized set of vintage clubs. The film blends dark humor with the rhythmic world of amateur golf tournaments, where the line between a friendly round and a criminal enterprise blurs with every swing. Ryan, known for his sharp dialogue and offbeat character studies, describes the project as “a love letter to the sport I grew up playing and the absurdity that follows anyone chasing a quick score - both on the course and off.”

The cast includes ensemble players whose names have not yet been fully disclosed in the announcement, though Ryan himself stars as the lead con artist. Co-writer and producer Josh Morgan also appears in a supporting role. The film was shot on location in Southern California over a 24-day schedule in late 2025, using practical sets at three private golf clubs that allowed the crew access to fairways and clubhouses after hours.

Freestyle Digital Media, a subsidiary of Allen Media Group, has steadily built a reputation for picking up niche genre titles that might otherwise slip through the cracks of major studio distribution. The company’s recent slate includes the horror-thriller “The Unseen” and the sports documentary “Greenskeepers,” both of which performed well on digital platforms. Fields called “Mooch” “a fresh, funny, and unexpectedly tense ride that marries two viewer favorites: heist capers and golf movies. Jeff Ryan has crafted something that feels both classic and completely new.”

Ryan, whose previous credits include the indie drama “The Last Tee Time” and several short films that played the festival circuit, said he wanted to make a movie that “doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still respects the game.” In a statement accompanying the acquisition announcement, he added, “Golf is inherently ridiculous if you stop to think about it - grown adults in pastel pants quietly swearing at a tiny ball. Throw in a stolen set of clubs worth a quarter million dollars and a guy who will do anything to pay off his debts, and you’ve got a movie that feels both specific and universal.”

The film’s title, “Mooch,” refers to the main character’s nickname, earned for his habit of always borrowing - never buying - his own equipment, drinks, and even rounds. Ryan developed the character over several years, drawing on stories from his own time as a caddy at a resort course in Palm Springs. “I met a lot of guys like this,” he said. “Guys who could charm their way into a game, talk a big game, and then vanish when the bill came due. But they always had a story.”

Freestyle Digital Media plans a wide digital release for “Mooch” later this year, with specific platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play. A limited theatrical run is also being explored, likely in golf-centric markets like Myrtle Beach, Scottsdale, and Palm Springs. The film will carry an R rating for language and brief violence.

Industry observers note that the acquisition reflects a growing appetite for lower-budget comedies that can find audiences through streaming and direct-to-VOD channels. Byron Allen has been particularly aggressive in building a distribution network that caters to independent filmmakers, often acquiring titles that larger distributors skip. “Mooch” fits neatly into that strategy: a genre hybrid with a clear target audience, made by a director with a distinct voice and a proven ability to deliver on a modest budget.

Ryan said he is already at work on a follow-up script, another comedy with a sports backdrop, though he declined to reveal details. For now, he is focused on getting “Mooch” in front of viewers. “I hope people laugh, I hope they root for the guy even when he’s doing something dumb, and I hope they maybe even learn a little bit about the weird subculture of golf hustling,” he said. “It’s a real thing, and it’s more elaborate than you think.”

The film’s official trailer is expected to drop in August, with a social media campaign centered on golf influencers and comedy podcasts. Freestyle Digital Media will also host a premiere screening at a Los Angeles-area golf club in September.
