The Fantasia International Film Festival, Montreal’s premier genre cinema event, awarded its highest prize on Sunday to Hanna Bergholm’s psychological horror film “Nightborn.” The Finnish director’s sophomore feature, which premiered globally at the fest, took home the Cheval Noir for Best Film, capping a strong year for Nordic genre filmmaking.

“Nightborn” stars Seidi Haarla as Saga, a new mother whose joy at the birth of her child curdles into something far more sinister. The film, clocking in at 92 minutes, follows Saga and her husband Jon - played by Rupert Grint - as they settle into a remote Finnish forest home. But while Jon sees only a healthy newborn, Saga becomes convinced that something is deeply wrong with their baby. The film tracks her growing isolation as she alone confronts a disturbing truth that threatens to tear their family apart.

Bergholm previously earned international acclaim with her 2022 debut “Hatching,” a body-horror allegory about adolescence and maternal pressure. With “Nightborn,” she shifts focus to early parenthood, leaning again on folk-inflected dread and visceral imagery. The festival jury praised the film for its “unsettling atmosphere and fearless central performance,” noting that Bergholm “crafts a maternal nightmare that feels both ancient and urgently contemporary.”

The Film’s Premise

Set against the stark landscape of Finnish woodlands, “Nightborn” draws on Nordic folklore traditions while grounding its horror in the everyday anxieties of raising a child. Saga’s suspicion is invisible to everyone around her - her husband, her mother (Pirkko Saisio), and the visiting in-laws played by Rebecca Lacey and John Thomson. Only her colleague (Satu Tuuli Karhu) seems to sense something amiss, but by then the rift between Saga and Jon has grown dangerously wide.

The film’s overview, as released by producers, describes it as a story about a mother “grappling with the disturbing truth” of her newborn, a truth her husband cannot perceive. Bergholm assembled an international cast anchored by Grint, best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the “Harry Potter” franchise, in a rare dramatic turn as the oblivious Jon. Finnish actress Seidi Haarla, recognized for her work in “Compartment No. 6” and local productions, anchors the film as Saga. The supporting cast includes Pamela Tola as Taru, Silvia Saloranta as Anna, and Satu Tuuli Karhu as Saga’s colleague.

The film was produced with support from the Finnish Film Foundation and marks another collaboration between Bergholm and producers who previously backed “Hatching.” The director wrote the screenplay with a co-writer, crafting a narrative that the festival described as “a horror story about the loneliness of maternal intuition.” The runtime of 92 minutes keeps the narrative taut, allowing little breathing room for either character or audience.

The Fantasia International Film Festival, now in its 30th year, has long served as a launching pad for boundary-pushing genre cinema from around the world. Past winners of the Cheval Noir include Japanese horror masterworks, South Korean thrillers, and Canadian independent productions. This year’s jury noted that “Nightborn” stood out for its ability to “make the familiar terrifying without relying on cheap shocks.”

Bergholm’s win places her among a growing cohort of female directors redefining horror as a space for psychological and social commentary. The Finnish film industry has also seen a recent surge in genre exports, with titles like “The Knocking” and “Any Day Now” gaining international traction. “Nightborn” is scheduled for a wider theatrical release beginning July 1, 2026, following its festival premiere.

“Nightborn” is rated for mature audiences and is currently in limited release. The film’s distributor has yet to announce a wide rollout plan, but the Fantasia win is expected to boost interest among international buyers and festival programmers.
