Penélope Cruz, Sian Heder, Huppert Set for TIFF Tributes

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced that Penélope Cruz, director Sian Heder, and French screen icon Isabelle Huppert will each receive a Tribute Award at this year’s event, organizers confirmed Wednesday.

The three honorees will be celebrated during TIFF’s annual fundraiser on September 13, 2026, which also serves as a key platform for recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema. Each will accept a distinct category within the Tribute Awards program, though specific award names - such as the Variety Artisan Award or the inaugural TIFF Emerging Talent Award - have not yet been assigned to individual recipients.

“Penélope, Sian, and Isabelle represent three generations of fearless storytelling across different continents and genres,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey in a statement. “Their work has inspired audiences and filmmakers alike, and we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on their achievements this September.”

Penélope Cruz - A Career of Versatility

Cruz, who first broke into Hollywood with a Spanish-language breakthrough before becoming a global star, is best known to mainstream audiences for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, where she played Angelica, the fiery daughter of Blackbeard. The 2011 blockbuster, directed by Rob Marshall, earned more than $1 billion worldwide and marked Cruz’s biggest commercial success to date.

Yet her body of work extends far beyond swashbuckling adventures. The Madrid-born actress has earned four Academy Award nominations - winning Best Supporting Actress for Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2009 - and has collaborated repeatedly with Pedro Almodóvar on films such as Volver, Broken Embraces, and Parallel Mothers. Her upcoming projects include a historical drama set in 19th-century Spain and a psychological thriller directed by a first-time filmmaker.

Cruz’s Tribute Award at TIFF will recognize both her enduring box-office appeal and her continued dedication to European art cinema. She is expected to attend the gala, which will also feature a career retrospective clip reel curated by TIFF programmers.

Sian Heder - From Sundance to the Oscars

Sian Heder, who won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2022 for CODA, will be honored for her work as a writer-director who amplifies underrepresented voices. CODA, a family comedy-drama about the only hearing member of a Deaf family, premiered at Sundance in 2021 and was later acquired by Apple TV+, becoming the first streaming film to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Heder’s path to TIFF recognition began with her feature debut Tallulah (2016), a Netflix release starring Elliot Page and Allison Janney. She has since directed episodes of Orange Is the New Black, GLOW, and Little America. The filmmaker is currently in post-production on her third feature, a drama set in the Pacific Northwest about a wildfire crew, which is scheduled for a 2027 release.

“Sian has a gift for finding humor and humanity in everyday struggles,” Bailey noted. “Her films remind us that the most powerful stories are often the ones that feel personal.”

Isabelle Huppert - The French Muse

Isabelle Huppert, whose career spans more than 120 films and five decades, will receive a Tribute Award that underscores her status as one of the most fearless actresses in world cinema. The French star has won two Cannes Best Actress awards - for Violette Nozière (1978) and The Piano Teacher (2001) - and earned an Oscar nomination for her role in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle (2016).

Huppert continues to work at a prolific pace. Earlier this year, she starred in The Taste of Things, a period romance directed by Anh Hung Tran, and she recently completed shooting a Miike Takashi film in Japan. She also maintains a parallel career in theater, having performed in productions directed by Ivo van Hove and Krzysztof Warlikowski.

The Tribute Awards gala will feature a conversation with Huppert moderated by TIFF artistic director Anita Lee. The festival runs from September 9 to September 19, 2026, in downtown Toronto.

A Festival Tradition

The Toronto International Film Festival first introduced the Tribute Awards in 2019, replacing the former TIFF Tribute Gala. Past honorees include Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, and Zhang Yimou. The gala raises funds for TIFF’s year-round educational and community programs, including film workshops for youth and Indigenous filmmakers.

This year’s event will also include a tribute to late director David Lynch, who died last year, with a special screening of Mulholland Drive and a panel featuring his collaborators. Ticket packages for the gala went on sale Wednesday, with general admission to TIFF’s public screenings opening next week.
