The setup is familiar by design. A hand-picked group of social media influencers is flown to a newly built luxury hotel on an unnamed tropical island for a launch event. The resort is pristine, the cocktails are free, and the content practically films itself. That is, until the guests discover that the island's native spider population is neither small nor friendly - and that the hotel's grand opening was perhaps less about hospitality than about feeding a very specific appetite.
Smith and his creative team waste little time on preamble. The influencers arrive, the phones come out, the first bite lands, and the film settles into a rhythm of escalating arachnid mayhem. The cast is led by Rose Williams, who brings a grounded, watchful presence to the film's ostensible protagonist, and genre veteran Tim McInnerny, whose knowing smirk suggests he understood exactly what kind of movie he was making. Social media personality Avani Gregg slides comfortably into the influencer archetype, while Abraham Lewis, Carlotta Banat, Anuschka van Lent, Justin Daniels Anene, and Owen Warner round out the ensemble as a rotating menu of potential spider chow.
What narrative there is functions mostly as connective tissue between set pieces, and the film's internal logic is as thin as a strand of silk. That is not necessarily a complaint in a movie like this, but it does mean the stakes never rise above the level of "who's next?"
