The announcement marks a significant collaboration between the acclaimed “Matrix” co-creator and the emerging director, whose script explores memory and trauma through a fractured narrative structure.

Wachowski, known for her boundary-pushing work in both mainstream blockbusters and independent fare, will lend her creative insight and industry weight to Grey’s short. The film, which is still in pre-production, will investigate the repercussions of a violent act through a non-linear timeline, with details of a young girl’s murder revealed through manipulated chronology and fragmented storylines. The project’s official logline describes it as “a meditation on truth and the unreliable nature of recollection.”

Instead, events will be presented in rearranged order, forcing the audience to piece together the narrative much like a detective assembling evidence. The young girl’s murder serves as the central event around which all scenes orbit, but the timeline will jump backward and forward, gradually revealing the motivations and consequences of the crime.

Grey has cited the 2004 Hungarian drama “The Day Before,” directed by Attila Janisch, as a spiritual influence - though her short film is an original work and not a remake. Janisch’s feature, which runs 120 minutes and stars Tibor Gáspár, Borbála Derzsi, and Kati Lázár, also employed a fractured chronology to explore themes of memory and responsibility. That film earned a TMDb rating of 6.714 out of 10 and was noted for its somber tone and experimental structure. Grey has acknowledged the older film’s approach to narrative disorientation, but stressed that her project will incorporate science-fiction elements - specifically, speculative technology that allows characters to revisit altered memories.

Wachowski’s executive producer role is expected to involve script development support, casting advice, and strategic guidance as Grey navigates the logistics of producing a genre short with limited resources. The partnership was brokered through Grey’s agents at United Talent Agency, who approached Wachowski’s representatives with a treatment earlier this year.

Timing and Industry Context

The announcement comes at a moment when short-form science fiction is experiencing a resurgence, buoyed by streaming platforms that have expanded distribution opportunities for projects that might have previously struggled to find an audience. Wachowski has not directed a film since the 2021 release of “The Matrix Resurrections,” which she co-wrote and co-directed with Lana Wachowski. She has since focused on producing and consulting, lending her name to select projects that she feels push the medium forward. Her decision to attach herself to Grey’s short signals a continued interest in mentoring new voices, particularly those working with unconventional narrative forms.

Grey’s production company, which operates under the banner Fractured Lens Films, is currently finalizing the short’s budget and schedule. Principal photography is expected to begin in early 2027, with a targeted festival premiere in late 2027. The short is being produced in association with Wachowski’s own production entity, Kinowerks.
