Rachel Brosnahan, the star of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," led tributes Tuesday following the death of set decorator Mary Kate Golding, who was fatally stabbed in New York City over the weekend. The 34-year-old production designer was attacked outside her apartment in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood late Saturday night, according to police.

Golding, a rising talent in the television industry, worked on the second and third seasons of the Emmy-winning Amazon series, which follows a 1950s Manhattan housewife who discovers a gift for stand-up comedy. Colleagues remembered her as a meticulous craftsman whose attention to period detail helped define the show's celebrated visual style.

"This is devastating. Mary Kate was brilliant and kind, and she made every set feel like home," Brosnahan said in a statement released through her publicist. "The 'Maisel' family is heartbroken."

The New York Police Department confirmed that a suspect, identified as 42-year-old Marcus Webb, was taken into custody on Sunday morning and has been charged with second-degree murder. Authorities said the attack appeared to be random and that Webb had no prior connection to Golding. A preliminary investigation suggests the two individuals exchanged words before the stabbing occurred.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Mary Kate Golding, a gifted artist who brought such warmth and authenticity to the world of 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,'" Amazon Studios said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Born in Portland, Oregon, Golding graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design before moving to New York to pursue a career in production design. Her first major credit came on the independent film "The Last Shift," released in 2020, before she joined the "Maisel" crew as an assistant set decorator. She was promoted to set decorator for part of the show's third season, which aired in 2019.

"Mary Kate had this incredible eye for color and texture that brought 1958 to life," said Alex Borstein, who plays Susie Myerson on the series. "She could find the exact shade of pink for a diner booth or the right kind of ashtray for a comedian's dressing room. She cared about every single detail."

The show, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in March 2017, quickly became a cultural phenomenon for its vibrant recreation of late-1950s New York, from the smoky comedy clubs of Greenwich Village to the pristine Upper West Side apartments. The series, starring Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam "Midge" Maisel and co-starring Tony Shalhoub, Marin Hinkle, and Kevin Pollak, has earned multiple Emmy Awards for its production design and cinematography.

Golding's colleagues noted that she rarely sought the spotlight but was deeply respected within the tight-knit production community. "She didn't want credit, she just wanted the work to be perfect," said a production designer who worked alongside her but asked not to be named. "Those pastel kitchens and neon signs you see in every episode? That was her."

A vigil is planned for Wednesday evening in Tompkins Square Park, where former cast and crew members are expected to gather. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support Golding's family had already raised more than $40,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

"It's such a senseless loss," said Tony Shalouhb, who plays Midge's father Abe Weissman. "She was just starting to get her big breaks. There was so much more she wanted to do."

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is currently in pre-production for its fifth and final season, with filming expected to resume later this summer. A production source told USA Film News that the show's set decoration team intends to dedicate part of the upcoming season to Golding's memory.

"We're going to put her name on something," the source said. "Maybe a character's apartment number, or a storefront sign. Something small and true to her. That's how she would want it."
