Samuel Murphy, played by Ethan Hawke, is a father first and a free man second. When he is torn from his daughter and thrown into a brutal prison, the film wastes little time establishing the stakes: this is a man with nothing left to lose and everything to reclaim. Enter Warden Clancy (Russell Crowe), who offers Samuel a proposition that sounds like salvation and smells like a trap. Smuggle gold out of a remote mine alongside a dangerous crew of prisoners, and Clancy will grant him his freedom.
What follows is a slow-burn descent into the mechanics of survival. The crew includes Rankin (Austin Amelio), Singh (Avi Nash), Olson (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen), Amis (Sam Hazeldine), and Letender (George Burgess), each carrying their own agenda and their own capacity for violence. Julia Jones appears as Anna, a presence that complicates Samuel's calculations in ways the film wisely underplays. The mine itself becomes a character: claustrophobic, treacherous, indifferent to the men clawing through it.
